KickAss Torrents was originally founded in 2008 and was shut down by the US authorities in 2016, as it was hosting infringing content on its website. However, the torrent site came back with new domains and hosted illegal content through proxy sites until May 2018, when KickAss Torrents finally declared that it had been shut down permanently after the owner KickAss Torrents was arrested. With the site gone, many users were left wondering what happened to their favorite torrent site and whether they would ever return to KickAss Torrents.
The History of KAT
From 2012 to 2017 KAT torrent site was one of the most popular torrent websites. However, after a massive police operation into its founders, it has been taken down. The owners (Artem Vaulin, also known as term and thief), were arrested and brought to trial in Poland. They were given a 1-year prison sentence.
How was KAT Shut Down?
In May of 2017, KAT was shut down after being raided by police. The site’s founder, Artem Vaulin, was arrested and is facing extradition to the United States. Shortly after, other torrenting sites like The Pirate Bay pledged their support for KAT and let its users know they had a safe harbor on their site if they needed it.
What Happened to Old Domains?
Now, The Pirate Bay (TPB) has become a site that helps users track and download torrent files from other existing torrent sites. TPB has also stopped hosting torrent files itself since December 2014 when it removed all data from its servers after police raided its offices in Sweden. Some of TPB’s old domains have been taken down or rendered inactive for a time, but now new ones are available.
Where are the New Sites?
KickassTorrents and ExtraTorrent are both popular torrent sites for illegal downloads, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe. If you want to download illegal content without worrying about getting caught, you’ll have to get more creative. The Pirate Bay has a ton of different mirrors, so if one site is down (which happens frequently), you can always find it somewhere else. Now that Hollywood has taken down The Pirate Bay, other sites like IsoHunt are popping up to try and take its place. Why Were there no New Sites Earlier?
Kickass Torrents was shut down by authorities in July 2019, forcing one of the most popular torrenting sites on the internet to evolve. Following a brief downtime, it has come back with new domains and a change of management. The resurrection saw dozens of mirrors being introduced to prevent an additional shutdown. While several former staffers launched their alternative site called KATcr, some smaller operators are looking to replicate KickassTorrent’s success without having to deal with legal troubles that have plagued its main domain name.
Are there any similar Sites to KickAss?
While KickAss isn’t around anymore, there are some viable alternatives out there. If you’re looking for an answer to that question, consider these sites. We’ve done our best to weed out (as much as possible) sites that may be scams or are going down a dark path, so you can feel safe using them.
