Summary
Black Swan is the story of Nina, a dancer with the New York Ballet Company who resides with her mother, a former dancer. Nina is the obvious choice for the role of the white swan in Nina’s company’s upcoming production of Swan Lake. However, she must also be able to perform the black swan in order to play the white swan. According to the company’s director, Lily, a new dancer, would be a better fit for the character of the black swan. Nina contends with her mother’s excessive protection throughout the film. She spends a great deal of time rehearsing her characters, but after befriending Lily, she begins to act quite erratically when she goes out.
Review: Screenplay
The story of Andres Heinz is strange and sad at the same time. People will relate to Nina’s feelings of insecurity and her need to be perfect. The script by Mark Heyman, Andres Heinz, and John McLaughlin plays with the audience’s minds in a way that keeps them interested but never tells them what’s going on with Nina. Some scenes, like the one where Nina is training by herself in a hall full of mirrors and sees her image as someone else, have been done very well. Also well done are the tense situations between Nina and her mother and between Nina and Thomas. But as the movie gets more and more out of control, the watcher starts to wonder what is really going on. The writers need to answer these questions clearly, and that, along with the film’s unclear ending, is its biggest flaw. So, only people who understand and like this kind of film can watch the film on lookmovie .
Review: Star Performance
The Oscar-winning act by Natalie Portman is great. She dances with a lot of grace and force and shows great emotion. Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel, and Barbara Hershey are also very good. Winona Ryder is easy to notice. Benjamin Millepied, who is also the film’s director, briefly appears on screen as David, one of Nina’s dance partners.
Review: Direction and Choreography
The direction by Darren Aronofsky is superb. He coaxes excellent performances from his cast members while successfully maintaining the film’s solemn tone. Despite its unique plot, the picture entertains while also providing many goosebumps. Ballet sequence choreography by Benjamin Millepied is stunning. Clint Mansell’s score complements the director’s vision. Rodarte’s costumes are spectacular. The camerawork (Correction: cinematography) of Matthew Libatique is fantastic. Andrew Weisblum’s editing is quick and moves the tale along. The film is technically excellent.
Final Words
Black Swan is a film that everyone who likes good movies should see. Black Swan is a smart art house movie with a great twist of suspense that gives a fascinating look into the hard-working world of professional dance.
